What is inner conflict?

Inner conflict arises when our feelings, opinions, or interests clash on a specific issue. In such cases, we talk about internal conflicts that manifest in various forms.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) offer an approach to the human psyche through the energetic balancing of the body and mind.

Thus, it’s natural for two or more parts of us to disagree on a specific issue. Just like a conflict between people, intrapersonal or "psychic" conflict forms through the emergence of a disagreement.

This disagreement can range from a simple difference of opinion with no major consequences to a deep conflict that prevents a person from making a decision, generating stress, uncomfortable emotions, anxiety, or even depression.

Examples of inner conflicts:

  • The desire to go out with friends while also wanting to stay at home in a calm atmosphere.
  • Confronting a romantic dilemma where one part of you wants to stay in a relationship, while another wants to leave.
  • The desire to change careers for personal growth, while also wanting to maintain the financial security of your current job.
  • A critical part of your personality that evaluates every action you take.
  • The difficulty of coping with the loss of a loved one, while also wanting to regain the joy of living.

Can inner conflict be prevented?

Any interaction or coexistence between people can generate differences of opinion, disagreements, or contradictions. This happens because each of us carries a personal history filled with distinct values, beliefs, and opinions. Therefore, it is unrealistic to think we can completely avoid conflicts in life.

The same dynamic applies to our inner lives because we are made up of multiple personalities. Each part of us has its own story, viewpoints, beliefs, values, goals, and roles, all contributing to our overall well-being.

If we accept conflict as something natural and constructive, rather than viewing it as abnormal and destructive, we will be more willing to listen to, understand, and accept the needs, intentions, and strategies of the different parts of our personality, aiming for inner harmony.

Managing inner conflict in EFT therapy

The therapist helps the client identify the parts involved in the issue and clarifies the expressed viewpoints. The person interacts with these parts to better understand what is being communicated.

The therapist supports this process through tapping techniques and reframing, offering empathetic listening to each part that wishes to express itself.

A clear distinction is made between the benevolent intentions of these parts and the sometimes extreme strategies they use. This listening process may uncover deeper difficulties, which will be addressed if necessary.

The beneficial effects of inner listening through EFT

EFT practice helps develop an attitude of inner listening, creating a safe space that allows:

  • The authentic expression of parts of the self in a secure environment that brings emotional peace.
  • Gaining a clearer perspective on the addressed situation.
  • Restoring intrapersonal connections and promoting inner collaboration.
  • Developing inner resources such as trust, creativity, compassion, curiosity, and calm.
  • The natural resolution of inner conflicts.
