The Mirror in the Forest

There was once a young man named Ethan who believed that happiness could only be found in someone else. He spent years searching for the perfect friend, the perfect partner, and the perfect life. Whenever someone left him or disappointed him, he felt empty and believed that he had lost a part of himself.

One day, while walking through a forest, Ethan met an old gardener watering a small tree.

"Why do you spend so much time on that tiny tree?" Ethan asked. "It barely has any leaves."

The gardener smiled.

"Because I don't water the leaves," he replied. "I water the roots."

Ethan didn't understand.

The gardener pointed to a nearby pond. "Look into the water."

Ethan saw his reflection, but the surface was covered with ripples.

"I can't see myself clearly," he said.

"Exactly," the gardener answered. "When your mind is full of fear, loneliness, and the need for others to complete you, you cannot see who you truly are."

The old man invited Ethan to sit quietly every day beside the pond. At first, Ethan grew impatient. He wanted answers, not silence. But after many days, the wind became calm, the water turned still, and his reflection became clear.

For the first time, Ethan realized that he had never been searching for love. He had been running away from his own loneliness.

The gardener said, "People often think another person can heal the pain inside them. But love is not medicine for an unhealed heart. Love grows naturally when the heart is already learning to heal."

From that day on, Ethan stopped chasing people to fill the emptiness inside him. Instead, he cared for his own "roots." He faced his fears, accepted his mistakes, and learned to enjoy his own company. As he became kinder to himself, he also became kinder to others.

Months later, Ethan met wonderful people and formed meaningful friendships. This time, he did not need them to make him complete. He simply enjoyed walking beside them.

Before they parted, the gardener gave him one last piece of advice:

"Never search for someone to become your happiness. Become your own peace, and happiness will recognize you wherever you go."

True love begins when we stop asking others to fill the emptiness inside us and start healing ourselves. Like a tree, a person grows strong not because of beautiful leaves, but because of healthy roots.
