The Five Office Friends I Decided Not to Have
It was my second week at BrightTech Solutions, and I wanted to make new friends. Everyone seemed friendly, but by Friday I had learned that not every coworker makes a good friend.
1. The Gossip
As I walked into the break room, Sarah waved at me.
"Come here!" she whispered.
"What's going on?" I asked.
She looked around carefully.
"Did you hear that Mark was late again? I think he's looking for another job. And Jessica? She argued with the manager yesterday."
I smiled politely.
"How do you know all that?"
Sarah grinned.
"I know everything."
A few minutes later, I heard her talking to another coworker.
"Did you know the new guy—Alex—eats lunch alone every day?"
I froze.
"Wait... that's me."
She laughed.
"Oh, don't worry! I'm just sharing interesting news."
That was the moment I realized: if she talks about everyone else, she'll probably talk about me too.
2. The Lazy Coworker
The next day, Tom rolled his chair over to my desk.
"Hey, Alex," he said with a big smile. "Can you finish this report for me? You're much faster."
"Sure... just this once."
The next day...
"Can you answer these emails?"
The day after that...
"Can you join my meeting? I'm tired today."
I finally asked,
"So... what exactly are you doing?"
Tom leaned back in his chair.
"I'm supervising."
"Supervising what?"
"You."
We both laughed.
Well... only he laughed.
3. The Drama Expert
At lunch, Emily rushed into the cafeteria.
"You won't believe what happened!"
Everyone looked up.
"What happened?" I asked.
"My coffee was supposed to have oat milk."
"And?"
"They gave me almond milk!"
She sighed dramatically as if the world had ended.
Ten minutes later...
"My printer made a strange noise."
Then...
"My keyboard feels different today."
Every tiny problem became a disaster.
After a week, I realized life was already stressful enough without adding someone else's daily drama.
4. The Credit Thief
Our team worked hard on a presentation for an important client.
Everyone contributed ideas.
When the meeting started, Kevin stood up confidently.
"I've created this amazing presentation," he announced.
I looked around.
"We created it," I whispered.
After the meeting, the manager congratulated Kevin.
"Excellent work."
Kevin smiled proudly.
"Thank you."
He didn't mention the rest of us once.
That's when I learned that some people don't steal your wallet...
They steal your hard work.
5. The Negative One
Every morning, David greeted everyone the same way.
"Good morning!"
"No, it isn't," he replied.
"It's sunny outside."
"Too hot."
"It's Friday!"
"Monday is coming."
"We finished the project!"
"They'll probably give us another one."
One afternoon I asked,
"David, do you ever see the positive side?"
He thought for a second.
"No."
At least he was honest.
On Friday afternoon, I sat in the break room with my coffee.
My manager walked by and smiled.
"So, Alex... have you made any friends yet?"
I smiled back.
"I've learned something even better."
"Oh? What's that?"
"It's more important to choose good friends than to have many friends."
He nodded.
"That's one of the best lessons you'll ever learn."
I looked around the office and laughed.
Some coworkers become great friends.
Others become great stories.
