When a School Psychologist Forgets Ethics: The Abuse of Influence in Educational Settings

A school psychologist occupies a unique position of trust. Children, parents, and teachers often view psychologists as neutral professionals whose role is to support emotional well-being, facilitate communication, and help resolve conflicts. Because of this privileged position, psychologists are held to some of the highest ethical standards of any profession.

But what happens when a psychologist begins to use that influence for purposes other than the well-being of the child? What happens when personal agendas, biases, institutional interests, or a desire for control begin to replace professional judgment?

The True Role of a School Psychologist

A psychologist's responsibility is not to create divisions, take sides, or manipulate outcomes. Their role is to understand, mediate, and support all parties involved while keeping the child's best interests at the center of every decision.

An ethical psychologist strives to:

  • Remain as objective as possible.

  • Listen to all perspectives.

  • Encourage healthy communication.

  • Reduce conflict rather than intensify it.

  • Protect the emotional and psychological well-being of children.

When these principles are abandoned, psychology can become a tool of influence rather than a profession of care.

Influence and Vulnerability

Children naturally place trust in adults who hold authority. A psychologist's words often carry significant weight because children assume that the psychologist understands them better than they understand themselves.

This influence creates a profound ethical responsibility.

An unethical psychologist may consciously or unconsciously begin shaping narratives rather than exploring facts. Instead of helping children express their genuine thoughts and feelings, they may guide conversations toward predetermined conclusions.

Such practices can include:

  • Leading questions designed to obtain specific answers.

  • Selective interpretation of a child's statements.

  • Ignoring evidence that contradicts personal assumptions.

  • Encouraging loyalty to one perspective while dismissing others.

  • Creating dependence on the psychologist's approval.

When this occurs, the psychologist ceases to be a facilitator of understanding and becomes an architect of perception.

The Dangerous Belief That the End Justifies the Means

One of the greatest ethical dangers in psychology is the belief that a desired outcome justifies questionable methods.

A professional may convince themselves that they are acting for a greater good. They may believe they know what is best for the child, the school, or the family. Once that mindset takes hold, ethical boundaries can begin to erode.

The problem is that psychology is not supposed to be an exercise in social engineering. It is not the psychologist's role to manufacture conclusions or manipulate people toward a predetermined outcome.

Good intentions do not excuse unethical conduct.

The moment manipulation becomes acceptable, professional integrity begins to disappear.

What Professional Ethics Say

Psychological ethics are built on several fundamental principles:

  • Respect for individual dignity.

  • Integrity and honesty.

  • Professional responsibility.

  • Competence.

  • Avoidance of harm.

A psychologist who distorts information, manipulates perceptions, or uses children as instruments in broader conflicts violates the very foundations of the profession.

Professional ethics require psychologists to challenge their own assumptions, remain aware of personal biases, and constantly evaluate whether their actions serve the child or merely serve themselves.

The Inexperienced Professional and the Temptation of Power

Being new to a school does not make someone unethical. Many early-career psychologists are dedicated, thoughtful, and highly competent.

However, inexperience combined with overconfidence can create serious problems.

A psychologist who lacks self-awareness may begin to confuse personal opinions with professional conclusions. They may become invested in proving themselves right rather than discovering the truth. In some cases, they may use their position to gain influence, recognition, or control.

Authority without humility can become dangerous.

Psychological expertise should never be used as a shield against criticism or as a weapon against those who disagree.

The Long-Term Impact on Children

Children exposed to manipulative psychological practices may experience consequences that extend far beyond the school years.

They may learn to distrust their own perceptions and become overly dependent on authority figures to tell them what is true.

Some may develop difficulties establishing healthy personal boundaries. Others may learn that pleasing authority is more important than expressing authentic thoughts and feelings.

Over time, this can contribute to:

  • Reduced self-confidence.

  • Increased anxiety.

  • Fear of expressing disagreement.

  • Difficulty trusting relationships.

  • Vulnerability to future manipulation.

The most damaging consequence is often invisible: the gradual erosion of a child's confidence in their own judgment.

When a Psychologist Stops Being a Psychologist

A degree, a title, or a professional position does not automatically guarantee ethical behavior.

A true psychologist uses knowledge to help people think more clearly, communicate more honestly, and understand themselves more deeply.

Someone who manipulates, distorts, pressures, or exploits vulnerabilities for personal purposes may still hold the title of psychologist, but they are no longer acting according to the values that define the profession.

The difference between guidance and manipulation is not always obvious from the outside. Yet it is a difference that can profoundly shape the lives of children.

The best psychologists help people find their own voices.

The worst misuse their influence to replace those voices with their own.
