The Inexperienced Professional and the Temptation of Power
Being new to a school does not make someone unethical. Many early-career psychologists are dedicated, thoughtful, and highly competent.
However, inexperience combined with overconfidence can create serious problems.
A psychologist who lacks self-awareness may begin to confuse personal opinions with professional conclusions. They may become invested in proving themselves right rather than discovering the truth. In some cases, they may use their position to gain influence, recognition, or control.
Authority without humility can become dangerous.
Psychological expertise should never be used as a shield against criticism or as a weapon against those who disagree.
The Long-Term Impact on Children
Children exposed to manipulative psychological practices may experience consequences that extend far beyond the school years.
They may learn to distrust their own perceptions and become overly dependent on authority figures to tell them what is true.
Some may develop difficulties establishing healthy personal boundaries. Others may learn that pleasing authority is more important than expressing authentic thoughts and feelings.
Over time, this can contribute to:
- Reduced self-confidence.
- Increased anxiety.
- Fear of expressing disagreement.
- Difficulty trusting relationships.
- Vulnerability to future manipulation.
The most damaging consequence is often invisible: the gradual erosion of a child's confidence in their own judgment.
